Today is a Red B Day


Students and Staff

There is a limited amount of tickets left for WINTER BALL and they MUST be purchased today before and after school in room 121. No tickets will be sold tomorrow or at the door!

The final preparation meeting for the winter pep rally will be on Wednesday, Jan 23 at 1:55 in room 225. All members of the captain’s council and student senate are asked to attend.

Yearbook: Departments wishing to have a writeup about a course in their department are reminded to email their story to Mr. Hunter.

Congratulations to Ms. Kaplan who has been selected to UNUM’s Maine Educators Hall of Fame- Starting 6! She will be honored at the February 1st Portland Pirates Game at the Civic Center. Free Vouchers to attend the game and cheer on Ms. Kaplan and The Pirates are available in the Main Office.

PBS FRONTLINE airs new series: :"Growing Up Online." Mark your calendar for January 22 at 9pm EST. This is a new series exploring the teen cyber-world of You Tube, MySpace and other social networking sites. Self-expression takes on a whole new meaning in the world of teens and the Internet. What are the issues, from cyber-bullying to Internet predators that today's teens might grapple with? This is another chance for parents to get insight into a teen world that parents know exist but often view from across a cyber divide.
There are only a few days left to order your 2008 yearbook. Please bring your payment of $58.95 to Mrs. York or Mr. Hunter in the Video Productions classroom.

Get out your dancing shoes because the WINTER BALL is almost here! Semi-Formal Attire for gentlemen is a shirt with a collar and tie and pants (no jeans, no hats) and for ladies, a dress with sufficient coverage to allow for ease of movement.

Attention ALL sophomores. Your help is needed in decorating for this weekend's Winter Ball. Decorating will begin right after school in the cafeteria. Please bring your creativity and excitement as we transform the cafeteria into a winter wonderland!

THE DEADLINE TO ADD/ DROP A CLASS FOR SEMESTER 2 IS JANUARY 31ST.
SEMESTER 2 STARTS JANUARY 28TH.

Scarborough Adult Education registration is Jan. 23 and classes begin Jan 28.Student should see their guidance counselor ASAP for more information.

ATHLETICS

The basketball teams return to action today! The boys will host the Bonny Eagle Stags and the girls will travel to Noble High School. Get your Free Riot Squad T Shirt from Ms. Reardon and come cheer on our teams! GO RIOTS!!


Music Notes

Pit band members should bring their brass & percussion instruments to rehearsal on Friday. We will work all marching band numbers first - probably 2-2:45.

Any student interested in doing Winter Color guard, an indoor activity combining dance, movement and equipment (rifle, flag, sabre) should sign up this week in the band room. The first practices are this weekend, Sunday and Monday from 5 - 7 in the HS gym. See Mr. Skeffington with questions

Pit Band for High School Musical rehearses Friday 2-4pm and Saturday 3-5 pm

The Box office for DISNEY'S HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL is open. Tickets are $8 for students and seniors, and $10for adults. Box Office Times: Monday -Friday 6:30 PM-8:30 PM, Saturday and Sunday 10 am-1 PM

CLUBS/ INTRAMURALS & GROUPS

INTRAMURAL WEIGHT ROOM: The Intramural Weight Room is currently open Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday afternoons each week starting at 2:30 p.m.

RIOT SQUAD: Looks like we have a lot to cheer about. Make sure you are sporting the colors. Get you’re RIOT SQUAD Shirt from Ms. Reardon while supplies still last and you have your choice of sizes. Come on out and be a fan.

The Equity Committee will reconvene on Wednesday, January 23rd in
Room #233 at 2:10.We are still looking for more members even if you were unable to
Attend earlier in the year.

Want to learn Chinese? Starting second semester, we will be offering a new extracurricular activity! Cindy Wang, our exchange student from Taiwan will be teaching us how to speak Mandarin Chinese. She will share lots of information about the Chinese language, its culture and its history. All are invited! The first meeting will be held January 29, in room 111 at 2:00. Check it out!

The Next Spanish Club Meeting will be an officers meeting on Wednesday, January 23. Our next full club meeting will be Wednesday, January 30.

The Junior class is selling Scrubadub car wash vouchers as a fundraiser. The car wash at Scrubadub costs $8 but we are selling the vouchers for $7 so save a buck and support the class!!!! The scrubadub location in South Portland is across from the mall next to McDonald's. Tickets may be purchased from juniors who are selling them or in room 128 (Val Sears' room) Thanks for you support!!! Juniors please turn in your car wash ticket money as soon as possible to Ms. Sears and also juniors who can sell tickets please come see Ms. Sears to pick up tickets.

Are you interested in poetry and like to perform? There is an exciting
state and national poetry recitation competition called Poetry Out
Loud, with big cash prizes and scholarships. SPHS is holding the first
step toward this contest on February 11, 2008. Pick up materials in
room 216 or see your English teacher, Ms. Jarrendt, or Ms. Gwozdz for
more information.

The SPHS GSA is a group of straight, gay, and other orientation
students and teachers who are interested in promoting tolerance and
acceptance of all people. Please join us to fight against hate
language and behaviors. We will be discussing issues, traveling to
other schools and meeting with their students, and learning about
events around the state. Anyone who wants to promote tolerance and
fight discrimination is welcome! Our next meeting is on January 23, at
2:00, in room 216. See Mrs. MacArthur if you have any questions.

There will be an important Freshman Class meeting on Thursday January 24th in room 220 at 2pm to discuss fundraising. All Freshmen are welcome to attend and share ideas.

History Club members please see Mr. Sapuan by the end of the week regarding the Maine History Day Competition.


There will be a RIOT READER folding party on Friday after school. Come stop by for folding, fun and fabulous pizza! See Ms. Price for details.

South Portland National Little League will hold registrations for the 2008 Baseball and Softball season at the First Congregational Church on Cottage Road, on 1/23, 6-8PM, 1/26, 10am-2PM, 2/7, 5PM-7PM
