Students and Staff
Are you interested in making decisions and choices that represent youth and influencing policy through active participation? The South Portland City Council needs you! The council is looking for 7 active youths in grades 9-11 to represent the voices of South Portland. Come to a meeting on January 29 from 7-8pm at the South Portland Community Center and learn more about how you can take part. (Pizza and refreshments will be served!)
GUIDANCE
Applications are now available for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Conference in the Guidance Office. This conference is for high school sophomores who have exhibited leadership in their school and community. Applications must be returned to Guidance no later than March 15th.
THE DEADLINE TO ADD/ DROP A CLASS FOR SEMESTER 2 IS JANUARY 31ST.
SEMESTER 2 STARTS JANUARY 28TH.
Juniors who are nominated for the Early College for ME program should return the application form to the guidance office as soon as possible. See Mrs. Tremblay if you need another form or if you have questions.
ATHLETICS
The Boys and Girls Swim Teams will compete versus Cheverus at the Portland Y at 4:00 this afternoon.
The Girls Basketball Teams will travel to McAuley High School to play the Lions - 4:00 First Team, 5:30 JV and 7:00 Varsity game times.
The Boys Basketball Teams will host the Cheverus Stags in the Beal Gym today - 4:00 First Team, 5:30 JV and 7:00 Varsity game times.
On Saturday, the Hockey Team will face the Westbrook Blue Blazes at the Portland Ice Arena at 9:00 PM.
Also on Saturday, the Indoor Track Teams will compete at the Portland Expo versus Scarborough and Westbrook. The boys' meet begins at 12:15 PM and the girls' meet at 5:15 PM.
The Cheerleaders will compete in the Western Maine Regional to be held at the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday.
On Saturday morning, the Mahoney and Memorial Girls and Boys Basketball Teams will play each other in the high school gym. This is a good opportunity to see the future "Red Riots". The schedule is as follows:
9:00 8th Grade Girls
10:30 8th Grade Boys
12:00 7th Grade Girls
1:30 8th Grade Boys

The Box office for DISNEY’S HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL is open.
Tickets are $8 for students and seniors, and $10 for adults.
Box Office Times: Monday –Friday 6:30 PM-8:30 PM, Saturday and Sunday 10 am-1 PM

CLUBS/ INTRAMURALS & GROUPS
Want to learn Chinese? Starting second semester, we will be offering a new extracurricular activity! Cindy Wang, our exchange student from Taiwan will be teaching us how to speak Mandarin Chinese. She will share lots of information about
the Chinese language, its culture and its history. All are invited! The first meeting will be held January 29, in room 111 at 2:00. Check it out!
The Next Spanish Club Meeting will be on Wednesday, January 30.
INTRAMURAL WEIGHT ROOM: The intramural weight room is now open on Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday afternoons at 2:30.
Latin Club will meet on Tuesday, January 29 after school in room 113 to go over plans for the spring, enjoy Roman cuisine and do whatever else is on the agenda. Be there on time, we have a lot to do!
RIOT SQUAD SHIRTS: Get your RIOT SQUAD SHIRT this week and be ready for all the big games and meets. We need you to come out and support your classmates. Show the other schools what RIOT PRIDE is all about. Shirts are available from Ms. Reardon in the lower gym.
Are you interested in poetry and like to perform? There is an exciting
state and national poetry recitation competition called Poetry Out
Loud, with big cash prizes and scholarships. SPHS is holding the first
step toward this contest on February 11, 2008. Pick up materials in
room 216 or see your English teacher, Ms. Jarrendt, or Ms. Gwozdz for
more information.
South Portland National Little League will hold registrations for the 2008 Baseball and Softball season at the First Congregational Church on Cottage Road, on 1/26, 10am-2PM, 2/7, 5PM-7PM
Juniors PLEASE turn in the money from your car wash tickets. Sales end in a week and a half!!
