2018 Headlight Yearbook Sale

Discount yearbook order forms are available on the counter in the main office and will be accepted until September 29 and includes free icons if a student has their name engraved on the cover of their book.   Students paying by cash or check (payable to SPHS) should return their order form and payment to the main office.  Individuals wishing to order their yearbook paying with credit card should go to www.jostens.com  Be sure to print your receipt if you order your yearbook online.

 

Seniors have until September 30 to submit their senior yearbook information form and their senior portrait (and optional baby or childhood photo) for the yearbook.  Photos should be labeled with your name and placed into the yearbook box located on the counter in the main office.  More specific details regarding senior photos are found at the yearbook website – https://sites.google.com/site/headlightyearbook/home/senior-section

 

Blunt Youth Radio Project

 Is seeking teens to join our year-round, free journalism and media production program!  There will be an open house for interested teens and their parents. Visitors will see high school aged producers host and engineer a live talk show. Check it out on Monday, September 25, 7:00-8:30 pm at our studio at WMPG on the USM Portland Campus! The station address is 92 Bedford Street.

Seniors who have submitted application forms to participate in our Senior Internship program should be checking their school email accounts for a message from Mrs. Ferrante to learn when you have been scheduled for your initial interview.

GUIDANCE

SERVICE ACADEMY NIGHT

There will be a Military Academy Seminar for students and parents interested in the educational opportunities offered by military service academies. Service academy professionals will assist in the areas of admissions, career services, financial aid and the application process.

NEW SCHOLARSHIP

CLUBS, TEAMS, INTRAMURALS

Intramurals:  The weight room will open for the new school year starting after school from 2:35-4 p.m. with Mr. Greer.  This is for all students and staff to come down and get your strong on.

Maker Meetup: come make with us! First meeting Monday 9/18 in room 246, the STEAM Studio.

Drama Club: First meeting for anyone interested in joining Drama Club in the Learning Commons @ 2:45  TODAY, 9/12. We need people interested in crew and tech, as well as actors.

9/18 Mexican Monday!  SPHS Drama Club is having a fundraiser at Chipotle by the Maine Mall on Monday, 9/18 from 5-9. Mention that you are there for the Drama Club and Chipotle will give us 50% of the proceeds!

After School Book Club:  If any student is interested in joining an after- school book club, please see Mr. Brough over the next few days.

The Civil Rights Team will meet for the first time on Monday 09/18 after school in room 325. Current members are especially encouraged to attend (and bring a friend!) and new members are always welcome.

Spanish Club:  There will be a quick Spanish Club meeting on Wed., Sept. 13 right after school in Room 355 (Sra. Esten’s room.) We will have elections, plan for our October 12 bake sale, and set a date for our Day of the Dead fiesta.

 Math Team: We’re ready to start another exciting year of Math Team!  Our first meeting will take place TODAY…immediately after school in Room 322.  The meeting will be brief and anyone interested is encouraged to come check it out.  If you would like to join the team, but have after school commitments please email Mrs. Drake or stop by Room 322 at your earliest convenience

Outing Club:  There will be an introductory meeting for the SPHS Outing Club on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 2:30 in room 301.  If you like to get outside, you’ll love it!

INTERACT

Welcome back students!!! Looking to get involved at SPHS? Want to help others? Then come to the first Interact meeting TODAY right after school in the Lecture Hall. All members and potential members are invited come and hear about our plans for the fall. See you there!

Yearbook

Yearbook will meet for the first time TODAY in room 250 at 2:30 PM.   Students will sign up for the various sections they wish to work on.  Any student selected to become a section editor will be reimbursed the price of their yearbook if their section is completed by our assigned deadline.

MUSIC NOTES

The 2017 South Portland High School Marching Band will kick off the season this Saturday, September 16th at Westbrook High School beginning at 6:00 p.m.   Come cheer on the 11 time Award Winning Gold Medal Marching Band who will be playing selections from Has Zimmer, including “The Dark Knight,” “Gladiator,” “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Madagascar,,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and “The Lion King.”

Job Opportunities

Piper Shores is hiring part time diet aides and servers.  Early evenings and weekends, flexible hours and daytime shifts are available. Please see the Job Posting board in the guidance office for more information.

South Portland Nursing Home is accepting applications for a House Aide.  Responsibilities include transporting residents to the dining rooms, helping to serve dinner and cleaning the dining rooms.  Hours are 5PM to 7PM.  Please see the Job Posting board in Guidance for contact information.

Sears at the Maine Mall is hiring associates in Home Improvement, Mattresses, Home Appliances, Cashiers, and Apparel & Backroom. Open interviews will be held on September 9th.  Please see the Job Posting board in Guidance for more information.

DOCKS SEAFOOD is looking to hire staff to bus tables. The hours are part-time evenings and weekends. You must be 15 years of age or older. Starting pay is $9.00 per hour. If you are interested, please stop into DOCKS to complete an application.

Cross Insurance Arena: is currently looking for individuals to join our Food and Beverage team. You must be 16 or older to apply.  FMI on how to apply please see the Job Board in The Guidance Office.
